Facebook admins are now able to geotag their posts by selecting the “where” tag in their new posts. The new layer of tagging for Facebook pages was just released. The same layer has been available for regular Facebook pages for a while now, but this is the first introduction into fan and business pages.

It seems as though all of my current clients have needed extensive web work along with my normal services, which is why I haven’t been able to do my daily postings. It happens and I can’t complain!

Simplify Your Email – Opt Out Of Facebook Notifications

I get way too much email. And I have several email accounts. Most of the email isn’t important, it’s frivolous, such as Facebook notification emails. The problem is, when you get burdened by a slew of emails – especially on Monday morning – the daunting task of going through those emails might put you off. Then you get behind in email, only because you don’t want to go through them. Yeah, I had that problem.

One thing that helped was to opt out of all Facebook notifications, except private messages. Facebook doesn’t make it easy, there is no “opt out of all” button. You need to check off every single type of email notification and there are about fifty or so. Go to Facebook > Account Settings > Notifications.

Don’t worry about missing something. You have a notifications tab on your Facebook top bar (highlighted in white outline). This icon will let you know if you missed anything.

The point is to get your email back. Too many emails will cloud your sense of priority and it is a bit ridiculous. Aside from Facebook, you may also receive other superfluous emails. Opt out! For Pete’s sake!

Backgroundcheck.org recently created this new infographic to help detect and avoid seventeen of the most common internet scams. The number of people who have been duped by these scams is staggering. Even if you think you are too smart and internet savvy to be taken by one of these scams, don’t count yourself untouchable. Many of the people taken thought the same thing. The scams are not limited to Nigerian emails and surprise lottery winnings. Many scammers develop strong websites which promote trust among its victims and the majority of them are in America with English speaking criminals behind the plot. These scams will keep evolving in an effort to bamboozle the one who think they are too smart to be caught. Always be skeptical!

Friday Tip – Hold Off On Your WordPress and Joomla Upgrades

In the past few days you may have noticed a panel in your WordPress admin panel stating “WordPress 3.4 is available: Please update now”. I like to hang back on these updates for at least one week. Preferably two.

Why?

Because if you are like most people using the WordPress or Joomla open source code as the background framework of your site, you have probably employed more than a few plugins and extensions. Chances are, one or more of these additions may not be compatible with the new framework upgrade. Give the authors of these plugin codes some time to update the new code, if needed.

After a week or so, do the update. Then make sure you check the functionality of all plugins from the front end of your website. If broken, make the fix and either get a new plugin or contact

Mashable Investigates The Inevitable Fall of Facebook

Mashable has just published a new article by Matt Silverman on the inevitable fall of Facebook, comparing Facebook to an empire.

But every great empire falls. As its forerunners did, Facebook will grow heavy under its own girth, decay from within, and collapse.

The article is remarkably extensive. After the mention that every great empire must fall as does every large corporation, the author speculates on ways the company could die, problems which lay ahead, what kind of company could take its place and how Facebook can survive a collapse by reinventing itself.

I was surprised because I thought it was going to be another article with unfounded speculation on Facebook’s decline from user boredom – yadda yadda yadda. Mashable and other sites post articles like this every day. But this one was different. It was as informative as it was engaging and surprisingly detailed with a number of comparisons and examples.

Don’t worry. The author doesn’t expect a fall or even a decline anytime soon. But it was rather interesting to take a glimpse into the future.

Introducing The Facebook App Center

It certainly took them long enough! When they removed most of the app features a long time ago (before Timeline) I had wondered why. I enjoyed placing a few of these apps on my Facebook profile. I assumed it had something to do with spam. But it seems now that it was all in preparation for the Timeline switch. Now the apps are back with a great new app storefront. Check it the app center at http://www.facebook.com/appcenter/

What seems to be missing is a category for business page apps. That would be useful. There are plenty of apps to be had for you business pages, but you have to do the research. The best way is a Google search for the app you need because as of right now, there is no true search in the app center. You can do a Facebook search, but it isn’t as productive.

I found an EXCELLENT list of Facebook apps for business pages on Socialmediaguide.com. Many of these are not free, but some are! Have fun!

Change Your LinkedIn Passwords

Last week, 6.4 million LinkedIn accounts were compromised when a hacker broke into a hash and downloaded user account names and passwords. If you received any kind of LinkedIn spam email asking you to follow a link and change your password, your account may be one of them. But even if you haven’t received such an email, change your password anyhow.

LinkedIn has been trying to remind everyone to never follow a link to change your password. This is the most common type of phishing scheme. However, LinkedIn has sent out emails to the owners of the affected accounts, asking them to log in (without a link) and change passwords.

Although I haven’t received an email from LinkedIn and my account may not have been in the hash of hacked accounts, I am still changing that password. 6.4 million accounts is an incredible number! And my doubt on the tenacity of their security is significantly increased as I wonder why the heck they kept a hash of accounts with usernames and unencrypted passwords on their server! Ireland is wondering the same thing and the country is seeking an internal investigation on the matter.

When a country decides to investigate your business…yikes.
